Reading...

I like to read novels, essays, poems and picture books, fiction and nonfiction. My favorite time to read is early in the morning before anyone else is up. I tiptoe down-stairs for a cup of tea and a good read. I also read at lunchtime and in the evening before bed, but my favorite reading time is morning. When I go on a trip, I always pack a  suitcase of all kinds of books because I am never sure what I might be in the mood to read once I get where I am going. And if I am not going anywhere, books take me places while I stay cozy in my own home.

...is one of the joys of my life.

Learning to Read

When I was in the first grade, I did not think learning to read was a very good idea. I preferred to be read to either at home or at school. I loved “reading” the pictures more than the words. I felt sorry for my older sister as I watched her advance to chapter books in the third grade, with no pictures at all. I remember peeking at her Christmas wish list that year and becoming very excited when I read: Any Nancy Drew books. I loved to draw, so I thought “Nancy” and I would have a lot in common. I could not wait to see these books which must be filled with pictures that Nancy drew! When my sister unwrapped two thick picture-less books Christmas morning I saw my future with books slipping into a dismal world of black and white type. I did learn to read, but I never lost my love of reading the pictures.

Read Everywhere

My family loves to read. We read everywhere and anytime, day or night, season to season. When choosing a book to read, we use all of our senses. If we see a book that looks good, we read it. If we hear about a book from someone, we read it. If a book feels good in our hands, we read it. Sometimes the smell of the binding and the pages of a book are enough to pull us right in. And though we have never tasted one, we have consumed many a book!

Reading around the campfire

Reading when grandpa visits

Reading during the holidays.

Reading at breakfast.

Reading at night when homework is done.

Reading in the hotel on a road trip.

Reading in a restaurant.

Where do you love to read?

What is your favorite time of day to read?

What are your favorite kind of books to read?

Write to me and let me know!

Reading with your best friend.
